I just wrote a little letter to David O’Doherty asking him for a wake-up song

Perhaps other David O’Doherty fans out there would like to see this happen, as well?

Write to phlaimeaux@yahoo.com, tweet to @phlaimeaux .

Not familiar with him yet? Here, FIX THAT.
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Hello, David!

I should tell you – well, who’s to say should, but some intrinsic sense of fraternal gratitude compels me to tell you that: my recent discovery* of your material and personality has been terrifically inspiring! Not only do I enjoy your brand of humour, it has reminded me to not be afraid to approach my own creativity from unconventional angles. You know how you get hemmed in by all these perceived rules and you forget that, not only are you supposed to break them, but they’re just made-up, ethereally swishy nothings, and therefore surprisingly easy to break?

So, thanks for that! Please make as many albums and shows as you can, as quickly as you can, as you make very good things.

Anyway, my real point here is to pitch a project to you – and please take it seriously, it has the potential to make you tens, possibly even quarter-hundreds of dollars! Just now, I was choosing a new song for my mobile phone alarm, which I use to wake up every morning, and I thought of scrolling through my David O’Doherty tracks to choose one which would hit that sweet spot where it’s friendly enough to help me not hate the world for making me stop sleeping, yet bright and assertive enough to drag me out of the lovely mire that is sleep.

But what if you wrote a new song especially for this purpose? I’m positive that loads of fans like me would dig it. Probably loads of fans who are not like me, too. Like ones with red hair, or who are shorter.

Carry on, and thanks again for being a source of goodness in a world that needs it.

Best,
John Forbyn

SERIOUSLYI do short-form improv, and last night the referee blew the whistle and fouled me because I (a man) made a joke about kissing other dudes. The foul meant that I spent the rest of the game with a toilet seat bearing the words “potty mouth” around my neck. Because talking about heterosexual kissing would be fine, but talking about homosexual kissing is “potty talk”. Meanwhile, over the course of the 90-minute match, the other players (and probably I) made dozens of jokes about murder – the day after Newtown- and these all went unwhistled.
I believe in comedic catharsis, that comedy (and all art) should be able to go anywhere and examine anything. Being offended is a choice, and if you choose to blow your whistle on same-sex kissing but not on murder… oi.
In short: Homophobes can seriously super go fuck themselves, which is funny because they’re their own gender.
